What made you decide to loc your hair?
“I guess it was more for style than spiritual reasons. I had been wearing braids/afro and wanted something new, but didn’t want to cut my hair. I felt dreadlocks were the way to go.”
How long have you had your locs?
“I’ve been growing my hair for 6 years, loc’d for 5 years.”
Where do you go for your loc maintenace?
“I used to go to different places, especially in the beginning stages. I even did them myself a few times. As time went on I started getting them done less and less, maybe once every 3 months. Now it’s been over a year and I haven’t done any maintenance. I just wash them and let them do their thing. If you’re in Kansas City, MO I recommend Stacy Best in Grandview.”
Whats your favorite product to use in your locs?
“I rarely use any, but if I do, it’s the Jamaican Mango and Lime Island Oil.”
Any advice for guys thinking of locing their hair?
“Go for it. Be patient in the beginning. Don’t worry about not getting them wet or getting them done every two weeks. They’ll grow and develop with time. For two years my dreads were a mess!”
What is your favorite fashion trend?
“I wouldn’t call it a trend, but I think a lot of companies and people are recognizing the quality and benefits of selvedge denim. I’ve got two pairs now and they’re all I wear. The breaking in process is a lot like dreadlocks (patience). They start out stiff and uncomfortable, but eventually your jeans will have a custom fit with custom fades and you won’t want to take them off.”
What would you call your style?
“Vintage European Hobo Prep”
Who are your style inspirations?
“My daily lifestyle, the weather, and Bill Cosby”
What is your favorite style era?
“The Mod Era of the 1960’s.”
Whats 1 thing that every man should have in their closet?
“ A pair of selvedge denim jeans.”
What made you start TSHM?
“My friend Kevin and I would always shop at thrift stores and would find amazing stuff. We felt our style was very unique and that we needed to showcase our finds somehow. So we started The Second-hand Man.”
What is TSHM main focus?
“ The focus is to showcase what I call, second-hand style. We also sell some of these great finds online. Eventually I want to get into repurposing and redesigning vintage wear into one of a kind pieces. If only I had more time on my hands.”
What kind of things do you sell on TSHM?
“ Shirts, shoes, ties, jackets, all hand picked vintage-designer items”
Where can we get your stuff?
“Visit the store at http://thesecondhandman.bigcartel.com/. Sometimes I sell on ebay too, at http://myworld.ebay.com/dipped”
