On June 1st I (Nina) will be back in NYC meeting brothers and taking pictures for the blog. If you are a brother and want to be feature while I am up there, feel free to hit us up at menwithlocs@hotmail.com! The last time I was in NYC I had a great time taking photos of brothers featuring beautiful headwraps designed by Corrine Roberts of She’s Royal Wraps. The brothers looked great and the pictures came out pretty good. Hopefully my second time around will be just as good as the first!

Take Care

NIna :)

Loc'd Talk with Big Homey

Name Jeffrey Poetically know as Big Homey

Age 37

Location: Washington DC

What made you decide to loc your hair?

Hair…I saw Locs as a sign of strength and a masculine neat form of long hair.

How long have you had your locs?

12 years

Where do you go for loc maintenance?

Right now my girlfriend Lauren “The Sisterlocked Diva”) twists my hair. Before then, I had my loc maintenance done in private homes.

What is your favorite product to use in your hair?

I am not overly loyal to any product line, but I make the products don’t have beeswax, mineral oil, or petrolatum. Price will often dictate what I buy, then black-owned businesses

Any advice you would give to brothers that want to loc their hair?

Research products and research locticians. A couple of bargain stylist almost ruined my locs, yet some stylists have saved me quite a bit of money. Wrapping your scalp with cotton will pull your hair. Petrolatum, beeswax, and mineral oil will leave build-up in your. Its probably best not to edge up your locs. Don’t cut off your locs unless you are certain you do not want them. anymore. (Many brothers who had locs and chopped them off later regretted it.)

Big homey is a poet/spoken word performer, we had the chance to talk with him a little more on how he got started as a artist.

How long have you been performing spoken word, and how did you get your start?

I started performing poetry August 2003. I was an event promoter/producer who started to write and perform as a form of therapy. After a life-changing even in 2004, my spoken word expanded beyond the local Washington DC area

A few weeks back, Tia and I was lucky enough to be invited to Philly’s first annual Natural Hair show! We met some dynamite people, and took a whole bunch of pictures. Of course at these types of events, we never expect to see men but I was lucky enough to meet a few. Pictured here is one of the men that I met Derrick and his lady friend. Derrick has been loc’d for 11 years and as you can see, his locs are gorgeous. He didn’t say much (his girlfriend says he is a bit shy) but he did tell me he maintains them himself.

I also took a few other pictures of vendors and vendor displays, I even had the opportunity to meet up with a spoken word artst known in DC as “Big Homey”. He allowed me to feature him in our loc’d talk (which I will post very soon). Overall the event was well planned and very nice for its first. The turn out was great too! Can’t wait to see what next year has in store :)

Take Care All

Nina

Oh by the way, Tia has finally put up our instagram page! So if you are on instagram, follow us @menwithlocs. Of course our facebook is still booming too www.fb.com/menwithlocs. Check them out and feel free to submit your pics to menwithlocs@hotmail.com!

how do i get on your blog im definitely a fan. and can i submit a pic?

Hi

Name: Vernon aka LoveFire, (Artist Name)

Age: 32

Location: Brooklyn, NY

What made you decide to loc your hair?

“I looked in the mirror one day and realized that the reflection of the person I saw wasn’t me”

How long have you had your locs?

“10 years”

Where do you go for loc maintenance?

“I do my own hair, I believe negative energy can be stored in your locs so I am very careful with who I let see or touch my hair.”

What is your favorite product to use in your hair?

“I use essential oils to cleanse as well as keep my hair and scalp from drying out. I make my own hair treatments and locing cream made strictly from all natural ingredients.”

Any advice you would give to brothers that want to loc their hair?

“Be yourself, find the person that you were meant to be and embrace him. Don’t let other people’s opinion of your hair affect you in any way, they don’t know your journey nor do they know your struggle.”

Random Question: What inspires you?

“I am inspired daily by The Most High GOD and by my children

The quote I live by “Who I am is an insightful revolutionary, a highly educated young Black visionary”

This is a quote from one of the songs that I wrote”

We teamed up with She’s Royal Wraps to bring you some great images of everyday brothers wearing beautiful headwraps. If you are someone you know would be interested in participating please contact us at menwithlocs@hotmail.com. This is one of the many images of a brother by the name of Lovefire who lives in Brooklyn. I shot this last Saturday in Prospect Park and out of all of the images I done of this gentleman, this was my favorite out of the bunch. Check back tomorrow when I post our “Loc’d Talk” featuring this brother.

I came across this brother here named Tafari. He was at the park too hanging out with his daughter and because of the length of his locs I felt I need to ask him about how long he had them. I smiled warmly held out my hand to introduce myself and told him a little about the blog. His hard express lighten and he told me “29 years” He then began to tell me a story about growing up loc’d and how he remembers the days when it wasn’t so popular. His family was devoted Rastafarians and his whole immediate family wore locs. He said he was judge a lot especially as a young child often hearing parents of the neighborhood kids calling him dirty shunning his family because of their hair. He also said how all his brothers has since cut their hair and he spoke on one brother who hated his as a child because of the ridicule he received. I asked him if he would ever cut his and he told me no. He told that he’s very attached to them, its been with him his whole life pretty much. I was so grateful that he was so open about his loc’d journey, allowing me to take pictures and his cute daughter who was so patient while Daddy sat on her bike. They were at the park so his daughter can ride. A few times while we talked, she asked if she can have her bike and finally he let her. While she rode off, he told me I know she’s going to fall (laughing) she’s not a great rider. Sweet :)

Name: Chris C

Age: 33

Location: Brooklyn, NY

What made you decide to loc your hair?

I always wanted to but wasn’t ready until June 2010. I grew it out until then. I eventually twisted it and got comfortable with it. My reasoning was mainly to do something different. It was a challenge because the texture of my hair but now that it’s below my shoulders, I am happy with my decision.

How long have you had your locs?

3 years in June 2013

Where do you go for loc maintenance?

I usually do it myself every other month. When I’m feeling lazy I go to a place called Strandz on Church Ave in Brooklyn or if I’m back home in Trinidad I have a friend do it for me.

What is your favorite product to use in your hair?

I prefer natural aloe because it doesn’t leave a residue and isn’t heavy on my hair.

Any advice you would give to brothers that want to loc their hair?

Be patient and don’t have too many people playing up in your hair if you can avoid it. Have at least two people you can trust with your hair available when you’re ready. I say two because there will be times one person isn’t available when you need it done.

What inspires you?

What inspires me are people who tell me I can’t or something is too hard or impossible. That gives me more motivated to not only start, but finish the impossible. One of my favorite authors said it best, “A warrior of light who trusts too much in his intelligence will end up underestimating the power of his opponent.” – Paulo Coelho.

Headwrap provided by She’s Royal Wraps http://www.shesroyalwraps.co.uk/

More Fitness Talk with Rene Georges

Rene is a fitness model having been featured in countless ads across the Florida area. Since this month we are focusing on health and fitness, we asked him about his own workout routine and to give general advice on how to get started.

Thanks so much for talking to men with locs and answering some questions about fitness. Tell us about your routine?

Thank you for having me. Like most adults, it’s difficult to have time for the gym. There’s school, work, and other restrictions that can inhibit an individual from going to the gym. I make sure I can put in at least 30 minutes, Monday through Thursday before bed. I work my primary and secondary muscles (biceps and back, or triceps and chest, or hamstring and quadriceps) one day then switch to a different one the next day.

A viewer wrote in and had some questions about weightlifting. He wants to know what’s the best way to start out on his own before he commits to a trainer. What advice would you give a newbie?

The best way to start on your own begins with a goal. For example, is it to gain 5 pounds by the end of the month? Or lose 5 pounds by the end of the month. The best way to start weightlifting as a newbie starts by using lighter weights. Keep in mind “Light weights, a lot of reps” It helps with form and prevents injury. You can progress with heavier weights weekly.

How important is diet when starting out a new workout routine?

Diet is more important than the actual workout. In fact, what you eat determines how productive your workout will be. Having a nice balance of proteins, simple/complex carbohydrates, vitamins and water will maximize your strength and ultimately put you in great position towards reaching your goal.

Tell us about your locs. How long have you been locing and what made you loc your hair?

I started locking my hair August of 2012. I decided to loc my hair because I was ready to make the commitment lol “no more braiding.”

What products do you use?

I use DOO GRO stimulating growth oil, and TALIAH WAAJID protective mist bodifier. Smells great.

What additional advice what you like to include about health and fitness?

Health and fitness is about a lifestyle, don’t change it to look good but to feel good.

Thanks so much for talking to menwithlocs.com!

Anytime.

It has given me a peace within me. People are negative and ignorant about why we grow our hair. Not only is it the only hair style mentioned in the bible but it is how I show what sort of man I am.”

Meet K.O.M (Keep on Moving) as we talk to him about his poetry and of course his locs.

Thanks so much for talking to MWL, this is exciting for me especially because I love your poetry and from what I can see you write about real topics. I felt really moved by your poem and video “Marching Song” What inspired you to write it?

“Thank you very much!!! “Marching Song”was a poem I felt I needed to write to encourage people to keep dreaming and NEVER stop! I write a lot about dreaming. After having my dreams crushed as a child, I have come to learn that there is no better feeling than to make a dream come true and no worse sin than to not even try.

I also wrote that because people, especially in America, are bred to be afraid of the truth and it goes so far that people lie to themselves. I think the more people stayed focused on the absolute truth, the truths that empower and unite us all, there would be a lot more happiness and forward movement… like marching. You can only march forward. So I want this poem to be what you are listening to as you march toward your dreams. This is your “ Marching Song.”

Besides poetry/spoken word, I know you just recently started an internet radio show. What can listeners expect from your show and what made you take the radio route?

“I started Spoken World Radio on March 5th and its going VERY well. I have a solid core group of listeners who call in and tweet us every week while they are listening and I have a new co-host Cha-Cha who is super sexy, intelligent and hilarious! Spoken World Radio is about everyone. Our tag line is “Where EVERY Voice Gets Heard.” The goal is to lift the exclusivity that is commonly attached to the spoken word culture. I have been blessed to be able to make a career out of this art form and travel all over the U.S and to Canada telling MY story. The challenge is that I am more than poetry.…we all are more than one thing. Creativity is a HUGE part of me but I am so much more. Spoken World Radio is a platform I created for the purpose of embracing people who are more than one layer. Especially when sometimes those layers contradict.”

We talk about EVERYTHING on SWR. Relationships, news and culture and we have segments dedicated to providing helpful information on finances and health and motivation. The goal is to share information that helps, share ideas that broaden and share resources that can inspire. And while doing all that, to have FUN. I look forward to Tuesdays. I am hoping your readers will too once they check us out. You can follow the Spoken World Radio on twitter @_SpokenWorld”

What else do you have in the works?

”I am finishing up an album I have been working on for a year and a half now. It has been an incredible process and I think this is by far my best work. I have spent countless hours and money chasing a particular sound. It’s a fusion of everything that I am and that I love as far as music. Poetry, Hip-hop, Rock, Reggae and some other stuff that I’ll let you categorize once you hear it. I believe this project will be a game changer. I will be releasing it around my birthday in September. #Virgo

I also started a book of the month club a while back where I release a mini- book each month. This is a short collection of poems for my fans who like to read and I create a different experience with each one. The response has been great so far and I’m finishing up my 6th mini-book.

I also host events professionally and I tour the U.S. hosting an event called Run For Your lives. This is a themed obstacle course and a festival with lots of beer, turkey legs, and zombies. You have to go to the website to see it because describing it otherwise might not do it justice. www.runforyourlives.com Its A LOT OF FUN THO and a great opportunity.

Ok let’s talk about your locs. How long have you had them and what made you loc your hair?

Back in 2006 I had a building feeling that turned to a thought that turned into a calm but stern voice that said “never cut your hair again.” So I didn’t. In 2008 I started my locs. That was it.

Do you maintain them yourself or do you have a loctician?

I have loctician that maintains them for me monthly or as needed. She is also a fan and a regular listener to Spoken World Radio. Hi Kat!

What advice would you give to brothers thinking about loc’ing their hair?

Well different strokes for different folks. To some it’s much more than a hairstyle and to others it’s just a hair style. Where ever you fall on that spectrum, just be yourself and don’t make others feel bad about NOT being where you are. In my case, for years I said I would NEVER get locs, it just wasn’t my thing. Then out of nowhere I felt it was something I needed to do. My gut told me for months to do it. I try to ALWAYS follow my gut. So my advice is: follow your gut.

Thanks so much for talking to Menwithlocs.com! Where can people get updates and more information about you?

I am the Spoken Word Rockstar and my name is KoM. KoM stands for Keep On Moving. That’s who I am and what I do. I am always on my way so to keep up with me hit www.MrKeepOnMoving.com OR on Twitter, Facebook and IG @MrKeepOnMoving.

With all the priorities we pack at the top of our totem poles, most of us let the most important live around our feet. “Health” and “Health Awareness” should always remain a front-runner, instead of a back burner. But “Good Health” equates to “Change” for many of us, and Change is as difficult to grasp as water beads over a waterfall.

Education, financial and social matriculation usually dominates our priorities promising better days, easier ways, and more restful lays. We all want to go farther than our parents, provide more as parents, grind hard and look damn good doing it. Now, that’s all good and dandy but the last time I checked, Good Health was at the top of the community disparities list. The last time I checked, FMLA only pays a portion of your salary. The last time I checked, the best thing a parent can do for a child is…well, be around. Missing that little yearly Check-up, could very well cause a big %#@*-up, in those major goals you set-up.

Every CEO and COO knows that getting dinged on Health & Safety violations can get you shut-down the quickest. As a precaution, that section is always top priority on their self-assessments. Some of our self-assessments include priorities like…new healthy weaves & new safety locks on that new whip. Now, ain’t nothing wrong with being “Casket Sharp”, but you definitely don’t want to be “Sharp in a Casket”. I’m just saying…Cancer and Diabetes are known as silent killers, and it’s too easy for those two ninjas to sneak-up on you when you’re always wearing your earplugs. Whether you’re the CEO, COO or HNIC, it’s best to prioritize, before your enterprise, is cut off at the head.

For most of us, living a healthier life means carrying out something all humans are resistant to…Change. But what is it about “Change” that is so difficult to grasp? Does its position really flow against the gradient, or is it simply a case of trying to teach an old dog new tricks? One thing is for sure…you’re not getting any younger. Sooner or later Health will make us all take a seat, but only the ones who’ve been proactive will have the strength to get back up again. The rest will learn the hard way, which a fast life can abruptly come to a screeching halt. Better hope you’ve had that tune-up…or you might miss that curve.

I’m just saying. Good Health is important….but let me read your thoughts…

Emmanuel is an author, poet, and loving husband. You can purchase his latest book “My Thoughts” on Amazon.com (Keyword: Ehiemua)

The Awakening Fashion Opera Co-star: Anthony Whitehead

Late last year we had the opportunity to talk to this brother about his locs and his style for our personal style month we did for the month of September. We decided to feature him again but this time we are going to talk to him more about his career as an actor and model.

Thanks for talking to MWL again Anthony, so tell us what you have been up to?

“Staying prayed up, hitting the gym really hard and reading my scripts 24-7 no days off!”

Now I know you just recently appeared in a play, tell us what it was about and a little more about the character you played?

“The Awakening Fashion Opera is a psychological love story told through a medium that explores the power of The Language of Perception as it relates to people of African descent. I play the role of the King who turns his back on his Queen and community. The King stopped listening to his Queen because he got caught up in crowns, titles and male egos. Eventually, he starts to understand the equation of beauty for his Queen and unleashes a great vision for his people.”

Besides acting you also do modeling as well. How did you get discovered, and what do you enjoy most about being in front of the camera?

“When I was a manager at Ross clothing store, one of my co-workers was a model and asked me if I ever thought about modeling. I told her I modeled in high school for fun. She told me about the 2010 Haitian Flag Show casting. I showed up looking confident and walked and based on the judges faces, the rest was history.

What I enjoy most about being in front of the camera? That 15 seconds of all eyes on me!”

So what next for you Anthony?

“Well we will be traveling for The Awakening so I will be gearing up my mind, body and soul for that…”

Where can we get updates about what you’re doing and your upcoming project?

“You can check me out on Facebook at Anthony Whitehead (make sure you like the page) We do have a page for the play too The Awakening Fashion Opera. Im also on twitter @awhitedamodel”

This month we are talking about health and fitness. I see you are a pretty fit looking brother. Do you have a regular workout routine and how important is it to you stay fit and feel good?

“I workout 4 to 5 days a week. Its also important to watch what you eat and drink a lot of water. My motto is, when you look good you feel good!”

Having once been an overweight teen and young adult, Goldy knows first-hand what it feels like to be unhappy with his weight as well as how much work it takes to get the body of your dreams. We had the opportunity to talk to him about his locs and get some much need tips and advice on how to get the ultimate “summer body”

Thanks for talking to MWL. How long have you been loc’ing your hair?

“I’ve been loc’d for almost 7 years.”

What types of products do you use in your hair?

“I usually use hemp oil to keep my locs shining but I find it quite hard to do as often as I should sometimes.”

Do you maintain your own hair or go to salon/loctician?

“I do my own locs with the help of someone else sometimes. I did go to one salon in London and I will never go again. They didn’t a good job I spent 4 hours and it cost me 75 pounds. It was a painful experience.”

What advice would you give to other brothers thinking about loc’ing their hair?

“I recommend people to think about why they want to grow locs. In the beginning could be only for looks but for me, locs are more than that. Being loc’d for me is a good way to show others that I’m or I feel African I’m not a rastafari but my locs express that I against this closed mind society.”

Your body is AMAZING! How much weight did you lose, and what exactly did you do to get the weight off?

“Thanks! I lost around 80 lbs a couple of years ago. I remembered that day like if it was yesterday. I was so stressed about studies and problems so I went out to run a bit. After that day I felt so much better and I started running everyday. In the beginning, I wasn’t checking my nutrition ( the most important thing to lose weight) so I lost a lot of muscle mass with my fat. I noticed how important it is to have a proper nutrition plan to achieve your goals in this world. 2 years ago I got my ass in the gym for the first time and thats I started to build.”

For someone starting a new workout routine, what are some things they should keep in mind?

“The first thing for someone who is starting a new workout routine is forget about the weight specifically and keep your diet in mind.

We are wrong when we say “I want to lose weight” we should say “I wanna lose FAT and replace with muscle”. For girls I suggest to lose the fear to go to weights zone in the gym. It is essential to do weightlifting like squats and dead-lifts to build a good body. Find motivation inside yourself, leave excuses at home and be persistent in your workouts.”

I know most people go to the gym when they want to lose weight, but what exercises can do that are just as effective at home?

“It depends. For a beginners every type of new resistance works to build muscle especially in upper body. Exercises like rows, push ups, dips and pull ups are very useful. If you wanna build mass on your legs weighted squats are basic because bodyweight is not enough but plyometric stuff like box jumps, jumping lunges are great to do at home.”

Do you have any addition tips for someone wanting to lose weight in get in shape?

1-The results comes with diet, work and good rest.

2-Abs cook in the kitchen not in the gym.

3-Girls use planks and isometric stuff to train your core, never do crunches if wanna keep healthy your urinary system.

4-Squats are the best friend of a woman.

5-Girls less cardio more weights

6-Less gym machines more free weight and dumbells.

7-Leave excuses at home and be persistent in your workouts!!!

8-Don’t be in a hurry, change your lifestyle step by step and the results will be forever.

9-Is not a diet its just how everyone should eat.

Thanks so much for talking with us!

Thanks for the opportunity!

Hey! I love the blog, curious to know how do you submit to FB?

Hi!

A few months back, I had the opportunity to talk to the talented musician Noah Andrade about his music and his locs. Now he is back to tell us what he has been up to, including his experience on performing at the Newtown Music therapy program developed by teachers/staff for students who were effected by the Newtown Tragedy late last year. Noah also has a album in the works.

HI Noah thanks for talking to MWL again, it was a pleasure last time, what have you been up to lately?

Lately I’ve been focusing on school, my music, and my high school track team. I’ve been working on my second cd with a few producers, Nigel Fubara (USA), M&N Pro (Holland) and Hernani Almeida (Cape Verde). So far its been an incredible experience and a very fun process.

Great! Now tell me about your experience participating in the music therapy program for Newtown?

It was just a humbling experience just to be able to perform for those affected by such a tragedy. I have an 8yr old sister, and when that happened at Sandy Hook, all I could think of was what if it was my little sister in there. It’s very sad to think about.

It’s hard to explain how i feel, but it’s touching that my music reached people in Newtown and that I had the opportunity to, even if it’s for a short moment, relieve the students and faculty of the stress that they were going through. I know there’s nothing that can make them forget about all the bad that happened. But I’ll try.

Lets talk about your upcoming album. What can your fans expect from this project?

Expect the unexpected (smiles) Its definitely a twist from my first album. I have more of my own original compositions on the cd. My 1st cd was focused on my Cape Verde, West African roots. Now, I get my inspiration from the artists I listen to, such as Bob Marley, Frank Ocean, Bruno Mars, Sting, Lauren Hill, Indie Arie and a few others. But still expect to see my twist to some classic Cape Verdean music. It’s going to be a fun, energetic, and relaxing cd.

Any shows or tours coming up?

Right now there is nothing major confirmed. But hopefully once the cd is ready, I’ll start up again in the summer.

Thanks again for talking with MWL we appreciate your time.

Thank you very much Nina, for blessing me with your time.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Just wanted to say hello because its been a while since I said hi and thank you for just supporting our little movement. Over the next few months, we are going to be doing a lot of HUGE things for the blog and our other social networking sites (which also includes us finally getting on instagram) so stay tuned.

Before I go, I want to introduce you to my loc crush Sepp. I recently became facebook friends with this brother and I probably “borrowed” just about every picture in his album! What I love most about his pictures is that each one seems worlds apart. Going through his photo album you can see the versatility in each picture which I TOTALLY adore. My plan was only to post one picture but as you can see, I couldn’t picture just one so I narrowed it down to my faves.

Well thats all for now folks. Have a great afternoon, evening, where ever you are!

Take Care

Nina :)

P.S.
